South Africa plays host to the seventeenth UN conference on Climate change otherwise known as COP17. It  is possibly the last opportunity to get some value out of the Kyoto Protocol, but this is unlikely. Durban may yet sound the death kneel of Kyoto. It is unlikely that all parties will be able to trash out a new agreement and for all intents and purposes this round is just the preamble to COP18/19 wherein the real essence of a new agreement may unfold. By the close of this conference in two weeks time it will be clear for all to see that the slate must be wiped clean and a new initiative will have to  be worked out. This is why I think that the delegates came to Durban not to praise Kyoto but to bury  it. (Apologies to Shakespeare)
